Broadband Briefs for 4/18/08

CedMagazine.com - April 18, 2008

• Exec shuffle at Moto’s handset unit
By Brian Santo

Motorola shuffled its executives yesterday, part of its effort to reinvigorate its cell phone business.

Rob Shaddock was named head of consumer products. He had been SVP of mobile devices. He will now oversee all handsets, except those aimed at business users.

John Cipolla was elevated to SVP for mid- to high-tier products. Steve Lalla, meanwhile, was given responsibility for mass-market handsets. And Bruce Brda was made head of worldwide sales and operations. He had been managing sales for North America.

• Verizon’s high-speed Internet service expands in Mass.
By Traci Patterson

Consumers in 73 additional Massachusetts communities now have access to Verizon’s high-speed Internet service, which more than doubles the download speed of the telco’s DSL offering.

The new service offers qualified customers a downstream connection speed of up to 7 Mbps for as low as $39.99 per month when ordered with an annual service plan.

In February, Verizon announced a $200 million investment in broadband expansion in Massachusetts, including the launch of the company's high-speed Internet service in 24 central and western Massachusetts communities (story here). The Internet offering is now available to more than 300,000 households and small businesses in a total of 97 Massachusetts communities.
